Acumen for COURAGE

Everyone has the capacity and acumen to choose to have COURAGE in their life.

What's your choice... COURAGE or fear?

The challenge is turning this into true COURAGEOUS Action to get the desired results.

There are many theories and approaches. I believe the following are the starting points:

1. Get crystal clear on what you really want. This means having CLARITY OF DESTINATION. When what you want is bigger than you, you will be more committed to following through. (Bigger than you means making a difference in the lives of others, in the world).

2. Figuring out what really inspires you, what it is that will get you up energized and excited each morning. Knowing your ORIGIN OF INSPIRATION will not only ignite your internal FIRE, but it will set you apart from the masses. (According to my online quiz, the biggest challenge faced for most people is feeling energized and excited to get going when the alarm clock goes off...).

3. Work on yourself DAILY... Recognizing your UNREALIZED POTENTIAL is a huge first step. Developing true unwavering BELIEF IN YOURSELF is essential.

4. Taking RESPONSIBILITY and actually Being RESPONSIBLE instead of blaming yourself or someone else when things don't go your way is a life-changing value and attribute. The only person actually RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS/INACTIONS is... YOU!  It's vital to Develop and Implement a well thought out dynamic, COURAGEOUS ACTION PLAN (I call this your CAP) and to follow through consistently (as in no matter what).

5. Develop AWARENESS and work on truly BEING AWARE! What does this really mean? For starters it means becoming aware of yourself, your environment (is it empowering?), others you surround yourself with, your target audience, and whether or not your choices are getting you closer to or farther away from your desired DESTINATION.

6. For me, the most impacting principle is Being Filled with GRATITUDE. GRATITUDE allows you to:  i. Find the opportunity to learn and grow from each and every challenge; ii. Learn to shift your perspective from a place of being reactive to being proactive (This is truly life impacting and changing not only for you, but for those you interact with); and iii. Immediately get out of the Vicious Cycle of Subconscious Fear, a cycle that rules the decision making and choices of most people (Because fear and GRATITUDE cannot coexist simultaneously).

7. Living with EXCELLENCE!  This translates to being your best self. Everyone has their moments, so when you're not quite there, give yourself a break and Be Grateful for the Opportunity to Learn and Grow instead of getting caught up in anger, frustration, self-doubt, hesitation, procrastination, worry, stress or anything else that serves as an obstacle to living the life you really want.

Anyone can choose to live with COURAGE. The key is having the desire and commitment to do what it takes.

Note that it is impossible to help or support anyone who does not want to help themselves to grow and transform into the amazing, incredible person they have the potential to become.

So... What's it going to be for you? It is after all... Your Choice... COURAGE, or fear...

Is The Tide Of Your Life Still Rising... Or Shifting?

...There are always obstacles and challenges. I can continue to allow these to create a seemingly overbearing, unconquerable barrier... or I can shift my perspective to see the opportunity to learn and grow that is always there in every single moment of every challenge...

100 Day Challenge: Post # 5, "Prioritizing Actions"

Wow, what a nonstop week it's been... yet again!

For my job as Executive Director of Hope Happens, I've been working on our first Donor Proposal Packet. I finished it late last night and shared it this morning. What a great feeling to have gotten this done!

Now it's time to focus on gaining clarity for my passion, for my burning desire and to wrap up some additional details of my Courageous Action Plan.  There's some irony here as I'm reading Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and the chapter I just finished last night is all about the driving force of "Desire" and how it changes everything.

To me, this burning desire comes from passion.

I've been honing in on consistently being aware of my mindset, my thoughts, to paying attention for how I'm setting my intentions, for how I'm being.

In the past I've fallen into the self-defeating trap of feeling overwhelmed. As I describe it, "Up until recently, I felt like I was hanging on to the cliff of overwhelm by my fingertips."

I purposely say "Up until now..." to release that demeaning and draining energy. This literally means I've turned the corner (and this has everything to do with my mindset).

I've realized the past few days with so much going on, that prioritizing my actions is essential. And though I have an overall plan laid out for the entire 100 Day Challenge, there are a few things I have not included at this point such as completing my Getting Unstuck Video Course and having my website redone (I think this site is okay, but would like to have one that is more dynamic, more connecting to the people finding it, and easier for people to peruse and find what they're looking for). There are a few other components as well that I need to accomplish to make sure I have the most empowering 100 Day Challenge possible.

I'm heading to San Diego soon to present the trait of Curiosity to 7th, 8th and 9th graders at Clark Middle School and have been working on my presentation.

There is definitely never a dull moment these days!

Yes, this seems like a lot on my plate. The good news is that I am feeling more focused, driven, determined and excited to make daily progress than ever before.

I could go into some additional details like the fact I had to take my computer into the Apple Genius Bar today and then to the Mac HQ store to order a new battery for my computer as it's not holding a charge, which took almost 3 hours tonight after leaving the office... and I'm going to be traveling a bit coming up and absolutely need to be able to use my portable brain (yes, my computer).

One of the exercises I'll be delving into over the next few days comes from my personal success coach. I'll be delving into where and how I'm spending and using my time. I have a feeling this will be very revealing and open my eyes (and my heart) as far as my passions go and how effectively and efficiently I've been using my time and whether or not this is moving me closer to or farther away from my goals.

It's all about prioritizing my actions based on my burning desire to impact lives... the lives of individuals with neurological disorders through my position at Hope Happens for Neurological Disorders and for people who want to get unstuck and move past their fears via The 7 Principles of COURAGE.

It's also simply about giving of myself to those I care about and to those who need my support the most.

This boils down to focusing on the solution, not on the problem. Focusing on the solution completely changes my thought process and subsequently my energy and my actions.

This really is my priority action # 1... plain and simple. And this brings me back full circle to why I'm doing this 100 Day Challenge.

Challenge Post # 3: Focused Action Changes Things

I saw the acronym "ACT" for Action Changes Things and immediately realized the importance of making sure the action is Focused. Here's why I came to this epiphany...

The past two weeks have been one of the most non-stop and pressure packed times I can remember in my life.

In early February I became the Executive Director of Hope Happens for Neurological Disorders (, a public charity started by my brother Chris in 2003 before he succumbed to ALS in 2005.

Two weeks ago we had a Hope Happens Board of Directors meeting and this past week we had our Annual Evening of HOPE, a wonderful celebration for "Sharing the passion to find cures, improve quality of life and for music".

Yesterday was a scheduled day for me to write an article and post it on my 100 Day Challenge Blog. Yesterday, the morning after our annual event, I attended a Cancer Research Symposium and went on a tour of The Hope Center for Neurological Disorders in the afternoon.

By the end of yesterday, I was completely exhausted.

As I sat with my daughter for a few minutes (before starting to grill some amazing bison ribeyes (prepared with a light coating of cold pressed coconut oil, sea salt, fresh chopped garlic and leeks, sweet potato strips and asparagus), I found myself thinking about the article I was scheduled to write for the day.

I knew I was spent. I realized the past few days had been amazing and that we (HOPE Happens) had just had what may have been the best Evening of HOPE ever during our 11 years. So, though whipped, I felt great about what we had done and about what I had done.

I started thinking that I really had to force myself to sit down and take the action necessary to get the article written. Why? Because in the past I'd typically feel into the proverbial procrastination mode and chilling was the easier option. I also now understand the impact for what it means to "Take Action Now".

In that moment I realized how important it is to have Clarity for the message to be imparted via the article. This meant I needed to be able to focus.

In other words, simply taking Action and ending up with a so-so article to post, would not nearly have the impact as it would if I was energized, reflective and focused.

Yes, it is important to make sure you "Take Action Now", yet it is every bit as important to make sure you "Take Focused Action Now".

I knew I could really use some down time and intentionally chose to spend the time with my daughter after a grueling two weeks and not being able to spend time with her.

This morning I began to feel bad about not having taken the action needed the day before… and immediately became aware that this was a self-defeating thought process. Being aware in the moment, I chose to return to a state of self-empowerment and take focused action right after my weekly Saturday morning Google Hangout that I've been doing for a year and a half with a group of intentionally committed individuals.

So here I am, completing the task a day behind schedule, but completing it nevertheless and in what I believe in a much more focused and empowering way.

My personal takeaway is that it is vital to remember the "FACT"… that "Focused Action Changes Things" is so true and so vital for consistently moving forward.

And as of now, I am still on track, on target, for my personal 100 Day Challenge.

It feels fantastic to "Get 'er done"… with focus... and with additional Clarity!

"Igniting Excellence ••• Unlocking Potential"

Are you completely sick and fed up with feeling stuck … like you're spinning your proverbial hamster wheel of life… or maybe have no clue how to go about Unlocking Your Potential to turn life around?

Then it's time to suck it up and pay attention. (This is not meant to be crass… just direct).

Making your life what you really want it to be takes personal responsibility… and that is one of The 7 Principles of COURAGE. As such, it's my Responsibility to tell you like it is and inspire you to wake up so you can start gaining momentum.

I've been through the wringer. I've been up… and I've lost it all and been down. And, I've been stuck in the seemingly bottomless pit of hopelessness.

Yet, there is hope. It's up to YOU to start to develop this hope… and then more importantly, to turn your hope into your "Expectations".

Think about it! When you hope for something, you have the tendency to sit around and hope for things to happen.

When you EXPECT something, you will take directed, focused, empowered ACTION to make sure it happens.

How do you change the almost futile feeling of "hope" into "EXPECTATION!"?

Excellent question.

It all begins with Mindset.

How do you start to change your Mindset?

Let's look at the Cycle of Mindset to give you a more insightful understanding…

Your Results will further empower your Mindset… Your lack of Results will disempower your Mindset.

Your Thoughts are what empower or disempower you and the ACTIONS you take… or the ACTIONS you don't take.

Not taking ACTION gets you Results by default. Results you do not care for, that you do NOT want.

Let's look at a personal example of mine when I had a position where I was supposed to be making phone calls every day…

I consistently found myself thinking how much I dreaded making the phone calls… how much I hated making the phone calls… how I wasn't very good at making the phone calls.

The ACTION I subsequently most often took was procrastination, putting off making the phone calls. In other words, my fear based thoughts led to a high level of In-Action.

What do you think the RESULTS were?

That's right, they were absolutely horrendous!

My thoughts were completely disempowering. They led to my not being effective at the assigned responsibilities for my job.

I was chewed out… and rightfully so! I felt terrible… and rightfully so as I had not only let my employer down, I had his prospective and existing clients down. I had let myself down.

All because of my disempowering thoughts… grounded in disbelief, worry, doubt, anxiety.

And these all come from fear.

How did I turn this poor performance around?

I started to focus on what I wanted rather than on my fears. I practiced reflecting on my thoughts that preceded the times when I did NOT follow through.

This allowed me to develop heightened AWARENESS for how my Thoughts had to change. Every time I found myself thinking how much I did NOT want to make the phone calls, I began to focus on knowing what actually making the phone calls would do for me…

The experience of making more and more phone calls would help me to be more successful at everything I did.

Because communications skills would constantly be honed. The more time I spent on the phone, the better the better listener I would become… the more insightful I would be with my responses… the more value I would be able to provide the person on the other end.

So, I began to literally become aware of my thoughts and change them by focusing on what I did not and understanding that the process of making the calls would prepare me and get me closer, call by call, step by step.

I changed my perspective of the process because I finally understood that the process is what results in transformation and creates momentum.

In closing, understand, realize and believe that you have incredible potential.

The way to start to Unlock Your Potential is to begin by Igniting Your Excellence by recognizing that it is how you deal with, how you focus on… The Process.

Think about what you want. Determine what you must be, WHO you must be. Figure out what you must do to become this person so you can have what you want.

See how the process, the ACTIONS you need to take to get to your destination, will help you Unlock Your Incredible Potential.

Ignite the Excellence that's inside of you.
